Surviving Scarcity: How Our Collective Will Paves the Way Forward

A Message from the General Manager
Have you ever looked out at the sea just after a major storm has passed?
The sky might still carry bruised shades of grey, and the shoreline is inevitably altered, but there is always that quiet, unmistakable moment when the water settles, the clouds break, and the Caribbean sun breaks through once more.
Over the past few months, as I’ve sat down with many of you across the desk, in the lobby, at an event, or after church, one recurring conversation keeps surfacing: things are tight. Prices at the supermarket seem to creep higher every week, shipping costs fluctuate, and household budgets are being stretched to their absolute limits. When resources feel thin, the natural human reaction is anxiety. We wonder how we will manage tomorrow when today already feels like an uphill climb.
Yet, every time that familiar knot of worry threatens to settle in, I am reminded of an old truth our forebears taught us: where there is a will, there is always a way.
Weathering the Storms, Inside and Out
If there is one thing the world knows about us as Anguillian people, it is that resilience runs deep in our bones. We live in a region blessed with paradise, but we are no strangers to hardship. We are tested by nature constantly—hurricanes that strip our trees bare overnight, Sahara dust that turns daylight into dusk, and regular earth tremors making the threat of earthquakes and volcanoes ever real and present.
Time and time again, the world watches us get knocked down, and time and time again, we brush off the dust, reach for a hammer, lend a hand to our neighbour, and rebuild. We don’t just survive; we bounce back stronger. We have weathered literal tempests and financial droughts, and through sheer determination, our spirit remains entirely unbroken. Scarcity is not new to us—and neither is our ability to conquer it.
The Power of "People Helping People"
When times are lean, having a place to turn can make all the difference. That is where our movement comes in.
Decades ago, across the world and in our own backyard of the Caribbean region, ordinary working people who were turned away by traditional commercial banks decided they had had enough of being locked out of the financial system. They pooled their modest pennies together in biscuit tins and community halls to form the first credit unions. Today, that global credit union movement spans hundreds of millions of members across the world—united by a single, powerful philosophy: People Helping People.
We exist specifically for you --- the people traditional institutions tend to overlook: the micro-entrepreneur selling produce on the corner, the young trade apprentice buying their first set of tools, the parent trying to ensure tuition fees are paid on time. At Liberty, you are never just an account number or a transaction fee. You are an owner. You have a voice, a stake, and a family standing behind you. When you prosper, we all prosper. When you face hardship, we pull together to help you find a footing.
From Surviving Scarcity to Sowing Abundance
So, how do we navigate this current season of scarcity?
We do it the same way our forebears did: through deliberate, disciplined community action. Scarcity shrinks when it meets solidarity.
Even when it feels like there is barely enough to spare, the habit of putting aside a little something creates a powerful shield. A small stream of consistent savings—no matter how modest—builds peace of mind. But more than just saving for a rainy day, now is the time to build for the bright days ahead.
That begins right here with our collective foundation: our shares.
Every dollar you put into your Liberty shares account is an investment in our collective future. Increasing your shares does two extraordinary things:
It builds personal wealth and equity for you and your family, earning dividends and establishing a solid bedrock for future borrowing and security.
It strengthens the financial backbone of our entire credit union family, providing the capital needed to support other members with affordable loans, invest in community initiatives, and keep our institution resilient against any economic headwind.
The Way Forward
Scarcity is a temporary season; our resilience is permanent.
Let us meet this moment with the same unwavering resolve that has guided us through every storm. Stop by the office this week. Let’s sit down, review your goals, and set up a plan—whether it’s adding an extra $20 to your monthly share contribution or opening a dedicated savings nest egg.
Together, our small steps add up to monumental strength. There is indeed a way forward, and as one family, we are walking it together.
Warm regards and blessings,
L Vanessa Connor, MBA
General Manager – Liberty Co-operative Credit Union
