Legacy Pioneer Awarded to L. Vanessa Connor at 19th OECS Credit Union Summit

In the Caribbean, the Credit Union movement has been around for over 160 years, but OECS group remained incomplete until Anguilla became an affiliate of the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Union, joining the movement after having an active credit union successfully registered in 2017. The adage ‘better late than never’ fits perfectly. At the 2026 OECS Credit Union Summit held in Antigua, the Legacy Pioneer Award was presented to eight individuals; seven (7) awarded posthumously and one (1) living out the legacy in real time. A local who brought to life a vision of bringing Anguillians into a global community of people helping people, she is Anguilla’s very own, L. Vanessa Connor.

Lenora Vanessa Connor is an Anguillian business executive, financial strategist, Christian, entrepreneur, wife, and mother who serves as the Founder and General Manager of Liberty Co-operative Credit Union in Anguilla.

Academic excellence marked her early development; she graduated as secondary school valedictorian before pursuing higher education in North America. She earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Nipissing University in Canada and, shortly after, her Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Liberty University. With a passion for learning, she has earned several certifications while also engaging in cross-disciplinary studies spanning postgraduate banking, a Paralegal Degree, a Bachelor of Science in Technology Management and her most recent pursuit of another Master's in Data Analytics & AI.

Having spent over two decades in the banking sector, Mrs. Connor built a comprehensive career that progressed from entry-level positions to executive management across various disciplines. She applied this extensive financial services industry experience to bring Liberty Co-operative Credit Union to life.

As Founder, she established a member-owned, community-first institution designed to provide access to savings, affordable loans, and wealth-building resources. Her leadership style combines high-level financial precision with a strong focus on the endearing credit union philosophy: people helping people.

In addition to her work with Anguilla’s sole credit union, she operates Prestige Consulting, where she manages a diverse portfolio of Caribbean and North American clientele on a contractual basis, delivering strategic counsel in business planning, banking software and technology, financial advising, and corporate branding.

Throughout her career, Mrs. Connor has maintained a strong commitment to economic empowerment. She frequently serves as a facilitator and motivational speaker, offering guidance on personal financial management, budgeting, and sustainable wealth creation. 

True pioneers do not merely identify a need; they forge an entirely new path where none existed. Guided by an enduring passion for financial empowerment honed over three decades, Vanessa Connor envisioned an inclusive self-governing financial future for the island and single-handedly brought it to fruition. Venturing boldly into a financial sector long dominated by traditional institutions, she navigated an intricate maze of rigorous regulatory demands with steadfast determination. Through her visionary leadership, she dismantled historic barriers to access, establishing the island’s very first full bond credit union and transforming the local cooperative landscape forever.

Yet, beyond the sheer scale of this institutional feat lies Vanessa’s profound spirit of servant leadership. Undertaking this monumental venture demanded quiet personal sacrifice, tireless perseverance, and boundless humility. She never sought the spotlight; her true aim was always member dignity, shared prosperity, and grassroots financial equity. This award honours a leader whose courage broke new ground and whose devotion enabled economic opportunity within the community; it celebrates a legacy that will continue to uplift generations to come.
